GOC 1 DIVISION TASKS NAOWA OF COVID-19 SENSITISATION CAMPAIGN

The General Officer Commanding 1 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Usman Mohammed, Thursday 23 April 2020, tasked the Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA) to campaign and sensitize barrack communities against the spread of the deadly Coronavirus also known as Covid-19.

This was contained in a statement Signed by the Deputy Director Army Public Relations 1 Division Nigerian Army Colonel ED Idimah and made available to the Press.

Major General Mohammed spoke in Kaduna when he received the Chairperson NAOWA 1 Division chapter, Mrs Hadiza Mohammed, and other members of the association at the Headquartes of the Division.

The GOC, who said NAOWA has over the years added value to the lives of barrack communities and host communities through its contribution to educatuon, health care and skill acqusition, urged the association to join the campaign against Covid-19.

He said the association ought to help spread the message of the benefits of the lockdown and social distancing to the barrack community so as to help contain spread of the virus.

He stressed his readiness to support activites of the association within the limit of the resources available to him.

Earlier in her remarks, the Chairperson NAOWA 1 Division Chapter, Mrs Hadiza Mohammed, told the Major General US Mohammed that they were at the office to congratulate him on his appointment as the 36th GOC of 1 Division.

She described the GOC’s appointment as placing a round peg in a round hole.

The NAOWA chapter chairperson also lauded the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutnant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, for his commitment and achievements in the fight against Boko Haram, bandits, kidnappers and other criminal elements disturbing the peace of the nation.

She said that NAOWA, as a non governmental organisation, was committed to the welfare of women and children in the barracks and the host communities.

Mrs. Mohammed disclosed that the organisation engaged in widow-assiatnce programme in the barracks as a way of assisting widows of soldiers who lost their lives during national assignments.

She said that NAOWA had organised Skills Acquisition Programmes to train and empower such widows to enable them become self-reliant.

The NAOWA chapter boss also outlined other projects which the chapter had embarked on for the welfare of personnel families living within the Division’s Area of Responsibity (AOR) to include Vocational Training Centre, Computer School at the NAOWA Nursery and Primary Schools.

She called for the support of the leadership of the Division to enable NAOWA actualise objectives of the projects.

The Chairperson was accompanied during the visit by NAOWA executive members.
